Birds Take Center Stage at CCIPH’s ABF Exhibit

The Center for Conservation Innovations (CCIPH) participated in the 13th Asian Bird Fair (ABF) held at The Tent in Las Piñas City last November 21-22, 2024 where it showcased the critical role of birds as vital partners for forest and ecosystem restoration.

The ABF, a regional celebration of birdlife, brought together birdwatchers, environmental enthusiasts, and experts from across the region to celebrate the wonders of avian life around the world. The event emphasized the importance of conservation, particularly of wetlands, which is reflected in this year’s theme: “Wetlands We Treasure for the Future.”

Several of CCIPH’s project sites greatly benefit bird conservation by protecting habitats and supporting biodiversity. In Mindoro, CCIPH works with the Indigenous Mangyan people on forest restoration efforts that safeguard endemic species like the Mindoro Racquet-tail and Scarlet-collared Flowerpecker. In Palawan, known for its rich biodiversity, the organization focuses on recovering ecosystems damaged by Super Typhoon Odette, protecting species such as the Palawan Peacock Pheasant and the Palawan Hornbill.

In Metro Manila, CCIPH helps preserve La Mesa Ecopark as a haven for endangered species like the Philippine Eagle Owl. In Davao’s Toril, a Marine Protected Area, biodiversity studies support species like the critically endangered Philippine Hanging Parrot. Meanwhile, Arillo in Batangas serves as a refuge for the Indigo-banded Kingfisher and other wildlife. CCIPH integrates conservation, restoration, and community collaboration through these initiatives to sustain the Philippines’ unique avian diversity.

In addition, CCIPH also highlighted the findings of its Green Recovery Planning (GRP) initiative, which emphasizes the importance of birds as key allies in restoring damaged ecosystems. This is aligned with the ABF’s theme of “Wetlands We Treasure for the Future,” The GRP recognizes that birds perform vital ecological functions, such as seed dispersal, pollination, and pest control, contributing significantly to the resilience and regeneration of forests.

The 13th Asian Bird Fair brought people together to celebrate their love for birds while encouraging action to protect nature. With a mix of educational sessions and engaging discussions, the event highlighted that birdwatching and environmental stewardship are powerful tools for positive change. (MJC de Roma)
